The 14th annual Transgender Day of Remembrance moved from the steps of the Georgia State Capitol to the Phillip Rush Center and was held Nov. 20, 2012. More than 75 people packed into the Rush Center to hear numerous speakers, both transgender and allies, speak of the importance of remembering people who have been killed because they are transgender or gender non-conforming. But the speakers also said it is important to remember the living and celebrate accomplishments. The keynote speaker was Dr. YaQar, director of the Alpha & Omega HIV/AIDS and Health Initiative Intl. Organized by the Juxtaposed Center for Transformation and founder Tracee McDaniel, TDOR collaborators included the Feminist Outlawz, Lambda Legal, Transgender Individuals Living Their Truth, YouthPride, Human Rights Campaign, JustUs ATL. The vigil concluded with the reading of names of transgender people killed and the ringing of the bell for each name. (Photos by Dyana Bagby)
