Melissa Carter: Good news to end the year
by Melissa Carter
December 21, 2012 00:00

Melissa Carter

It has been a somber week for the country. The shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut left us all feeling overwhelmed by grief and frustration and anger.

In the coming weeks, discussions of gun control, mental illness and violence will consume the media.  But I have chosen to use this space to remind you of the achievements our country has made in the past year instead of our tragedies.

Indeed, 2012 has been a banner year for LGBT rights, both locally and nationally.

Topher Payne: Giving up the night
by Topher Payne

I cannot remember exactly when it started — late July, maybe? But one night I looked up from my work at four in the morning and said, “Aw hell, it’s better if I just don’t sleep.” I got a few extra hours of tasks accomplished, the sun rose, and I went on about my day.

Sure, I guzzled like five pots of coffee, and I was a little weepy and reactionary by sunset— I had an argument with the dog that I’m pretty sure I lost — but overall I was pleased with the number of things which got checked off the to-do list.

I recognized that, just for a little while, I’d scheduled more tasks than could actually be accomplished during normal human waking hours, and I might have to sneak in an all-nighter here and there to stay on top of everything.

Topher Payne: When good enough isn’t good enough
by Topher Payne

We live in a part of town that people tend to pass through on their way to somewhere more desirable — the remnants of a once-picturesque 1950s suburb built around Avondale Mall.

That mall is now a Wal-Mart that managed to grow so sketchy in its brief existence that the Wal-Mart people decided to build another one less than five minutes away.

This is a model established to great success by other businesses in our area: Bad Wal-Mart is within spitting distance of Scary Wells Fargo, Don’t Go To That Kroger, and The Pizza Hut Where You Might Die.

Melissa Carter: The best laid plans
by Ryan Watkins

While running errands the other day, I saw two cars just involved in a fender bender parked on the side of the road. The offender was out of her car approaching the guy she just hit, flashing a flirty smile as I drove by.

Even though her charm may have been a tactic to manipulate him from calling the police, it made me wonder about the odd circumstances where couples meet, so I posed that question on Facebook.

Among the venues of church or, oddly enough, family reunions, there were some pretty unique answers:

Young black gay men, HIV and the future
by Charles Stephens & Kenneth Maurice Pass
November 23, 2012 00:00

Charles Stephens and Kenneth Maurice Pass

On Dec. 1, we commemorate World AIDS Day. Last month, we celebrated the 22nd anniversary of AIDS Walk Atlanta, perhaps one of the most enduring rituals of the local HIV/AIDS community.

These two milestones are part of a series of significant events over the past few months locally and nationally: The United States Conference on AIDS, also in October; National Gay Men's HIV/AIDS Awareness Day in September; and the much anticipated International AIDS Conference held in Washington, DC, back in July.

Throughout these high profile events and activities, one message remains clear: We are at a turning point in the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
