Gay public sex gives bigots ammo to use against us
Re: “Lesbians having sex in Columbus State library are arrested” (April 8, 2011)
"A library is likely the emptiest place anyone could go to get it on short of a hotel room."
"Why is this the type of story that always comes out of Columbus? How many stories of LGBT interest will WRBL actually run that don’t reinforce negative stereotypes held by many in my conservative hometown?"

To the Editor:
A robust discussion is underway about the potential use of anti-HIV drugs to prevent HIV infection (also known as pre-exposure prophylaxis or PrEP). Our study, called iPrEx, provided the first evidence that the daily use of PrEP with the FDA-approved HIV treatment Truvada can significantly reduce HIV infection risk in gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women.
Recently, a private healthcare provider began a paid advertising campaign urging the FDA not to even consider approving PrEP — charging that MSM will stop using condoms if PrEP is permitted.
The pros and cons of PrEP use should be vigorously debated — but that debate should be based on facts, rather than the assumption that MSM will not act to protect themselves and others from infection. Here are the facts about the iPrEX study:

Despite attack on gay men, St. Lucia not homophobic
Re: “Gay Atlanta men attacked in St. Lucia hate crime” (March 6 and March 18)
As a St Lucian I know that anti-gay bias is not the sentiment of the whole island. Most people on the island are grew up in the Catholic Church and we all know about anti-gay preaching all over the world. It is not the teachings of “Black preachers” as someone mentioned... I grew up in a church lead by white American/Canadian priests. The attack was based on the ignorance of a few men. I am very sorry about what happened to the men because no one should have to go through an attack like that while on vacation. That is not the St Lucia I remember, it truly is paradise. Just want everyone reading this to know that the men who attacked the tourists were ignorant and do not represent the entire population.

Editor's note: This letter was submitted by Rep. Karla Drenner in response to a March 11 editorial by Laura Douglas-Brown titled "Gay state rep honors gay politician and lobbyist — only without the 'gay.'" Click here to read. Dear Editor, It was my great pleasure last week to author a resolution in the Georgia General Assembly to honor my longtime friend and colleague Cathy Woolard. As most readers already know, Cathy is our very own Georgia treasure who has made her mark in this country and on the rest of the world. Her dedication to the needs of women and children, transportation, affordable housing, fair and equal treatment in the workplace, reproductive rights and human rights is remarkable. Cathy is also gay. Because of her sexuality — or maybe in spite of it — Cathy has worked harder to bring fairness and justice to Atlanta, to this region, indeed to this nation. Her tireless efforts during her tenure in Washington, D.C., helped many gay employees realize workplace justice.

Would you watch reality TV about Atlanta activists?
Re: “Taking a peek into black gay Atlanta” (March 9)
"Instead of a reality TV show spotlighting gay people in Atlanta obsessed with their egos, their nightclubs, their bling, their Mercedes and their own self-adulating, lip-glossed fabulousness, how about a reality TV show about gay people in Atlanta who are working for nondiscrimination, who are working for marriage equality, who are serving in the military, who are serving the HIV/AIDS population, who are gentrifying and renovating the run-down neighborhoods, and oh, can’t forget, who are running the gay media? I’d be a lot more interested in that show."
