According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the sheriff’s department in Essex County, N.J., has suspended undercover patrols in Branch Brook Park, the location of a recent shooting of a Suwanee, Ga., businessman allegedly engaged in sexual activity in the park. Branch Brook Park is a well-known gay Newark cruising park. Defarra Gaymon was shot by an undercover detective in the park on July 16. Gaymon was married and had several children. The detective said he was attempting to arrest Gaymon and thought he was reaching for a gun. The AJC reports that the move is temporary and that more uniformed officers would be patrolling the park in place of undercover officers. The adjustment comes on the heels of several advocacy groups, including the ACLU and Garden State Equality, calling for an investigation into the incident. f/t AJC
