Senate to vote on 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' repeal today

Gay rights supporters are urged to call their senators this morning as the U.S. Senate is expected to vote today on an amendment to the Defense Authorization bill that would set in motion repeal of the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" ban on openly gay service members.

Notes the Human Rights Campaign on its blog:

This vote is an important hurdle to make repeal a reality – but the fight is far from over: Our opponents’ pressure to filibuster threatens to stop repeal from moving forward.

Senator John McCain has threatened to block the vote from even happening, so we have to let our lawmakers know that the time for repeal is now.

Swing senators are making up their minds as we speak. We must do everything we can to let these senators know, as well as those who are already on our side, that both the American people and our military’s leaders support bringing this law to an end.

Supporters of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" repeal are asked to continue calling their senators as well as Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.)

As the gay Stonewall Democrats urged in an email today:

Call Senator McCain's office now at (202) 224-2235 and tell him to let the bill come to the floor and begin debate. Americans have spoken and they overwhelmingly want DADT repealed.

Georgia's two U.S. senators, Johnny Isakson and Saxby Chambliss, have opposed allowing gays to serve openly in the military, but activists still want them to hear loudly from repeal supporters.

Georgia Equality, the statewide LGBT advocacy group, sent a Facebook note to supporters this morning:

Call Sen. Chambliss (202-224-3521) and Sen. Isakson (202) 224-3643 to let them know you support the repeal of DADT!

Need some talking points? You can also watch Atlantan Jeff Cleghorn debate "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" on Fox 5 News last night:
