Georgia deletes questions about teen sexual behavior on national survey
by Dyana Bagby
December 06, 2012 16:13

The Youth Risk Behavior Survelliance Survey is given every two years to high school students in the U.S. to gather information and help guide policy on such topics as sex education, teen pregnancy, drug and alcohol abuse, smoking and seatbelt use.

Georgia is one of five states, however, that deletes survey questions that address sexual behavior, according to an action alert from Georgia Equality. Georgia Equality, the state's largest LGBT advocacy organization, wants people to contact Gov. Nathan Deal and ask him to include the sexual behavior questions in this year's survey.

[Updated] Media campaign launched to find missing Ga. lesbian
by Ryan Watkins
December 04, 2012 16:54

 Lisa Lawson

This story has been updated.

Henry County resident Lisa Lawson has been reported missing and her girlfriend, Michelle Alexander, launched a campaign to help find her at www.findlisalawson.com.

Lawson, who is 40, was last seen Nov. 19 in Clayton County, according to the website. Her description states that she is 5'10” and 175 pounds. She is an African-American woman, last seen wearing a red Atlanta Falcons sweatshirt and black sweatpants. She was driving a green 2001 Chevrolet Suburban (tag PAN 6028) after taking her daughter to work.

Alexander told GA Voice she and Lawson have been together for about five months. They have known each other for four years, she added.

“I really don't know. The family and I have tried to ponder,” Alexander said. “There were some text messages sent to me and some family members telling us that she loved us very much and then she disappeared. We don't know if she ran away. We don't know if she's in a ditch somewhere. We just don't know.”

Domestic partners of University of Georgia employees may be eligible for some benefits by the end of the year, according to the Athens Banner-Herald.

UGA President Michael Adams said he wants to make available "soft" benefits to domestic partners, such as dental insurance, by the end of the year. According to the Athens Banner-Herald, Adams has written a letter to University System of Georgia Chancellor Hank Huckaby "asking for clarification to make sure he can also extend health insurance benefits to unmarried partners."

Atlanta scores 82 for 'municipal equality'; other Ga. cities fail LGBT ratings
by Laura Douglas-Brown
November 27, 2012 12:10

Atlanta scored 82 out of 100 on LGBT issues in the new Municipal Equality Index released by the Human Rights Campaign.

Three other Georgia municipalities — all known for being LGBT-friendly — received much lower scores: Decatur received a score of 27, the North Druid Hills area of Dekalb County received 15 and Avondale Estates, home to openly gay State Rep. Karla Drenner, scored 8.

The report examines almost 50 LGBT-related criteria in 137 cities, including the 50 state capitals, 50 cities with the highest populations in the country, and the top 25 large cities, top 25 medium-sized cities, and top 25 small cities with the highest concentrations of same-sex couples identified in the 2010 U.S. Census.

Scores are based on policies and procedures and are not a measure of the "climate" for LGBT people, since some areas can seem friendly and accepting even without actual laws on the books, HRC stressed.
