$31,000 raised for Atlanta's LGBT Rush Center
by Dyana Bagby
March 31, 2013 00:08

The Phillip Rush Center begins expansion plans Monday into an approximate 1,700 square foot space in a building located directly behind its current location in Candler Park thanks to more than $31,000 raised at a reception on Saturday.

Linda Ellis, executive director of the Health Initiative, is co-director of the Rush Center with Jeff Graham, executive director of Georgia Equality. She explained Saturday that the expansion was needed because the Rush Center has outgrown its space at 1530 DeKalb Ave. as more and more LGBT organizations, such as the Rainbow Center, which serves and advocates for LGBT Jewish people and families, seek permanent office space. The expansion is also to meet the needs of a statewide survey of LGBT residents.

Two hearings on pro-gay bills cited as progress for conservative Gold Dome
by Laura Douglas-Brown & Dyana Bagby
March 29, 2013 00:00

Karla Drenner

As the Georgia General Assembly adjourned its annual 40-day session, the only specifically LGBT bill to pass this year was a resolution honoring the Atlanta Freedom Bands — and even that caused controversy.

Introduced by state Rep. Karla Drenner (D-Avondale Estates), one of three openly gay members of the General Assembly, the resolution was similar to those routinely passed every day to honor an organization or individual, with one exception.

“This bill had LGBT in there … I thought it was really innocuous,” Drenner said. “I worked on it to make it palatable for everybody and I removed everything that could be deemed to be inflammatory except LGBT.”

[UPDATED] Ga. House approves resolution honoring gay Atlanta Freedom Bands
by Dyana Bagby and Laura Douglas-Brown
March 22, 2013 14:27

The Ga. House approved today a resolution honoring the Atlanta Freedom Bands, a day after a Republican lawmaker blocked a vote on the measure lauding the LGBT organization.

Rep. Matt Ramsey (R-Peachtree City) initially blocked the resolution introduced by openly gay state Rep. Karla Drenner (D-Avondale Estates), asking a vote be delayed until Friday.

Drenner told the AJC yesterday she was "not surprised" her resolution was blocked. While similar resolutions are routinely approved by the state House, lawmakers have balked at other efforts to honor gay organizations.

[Video] Hearing testimony: Ga. LGBT employment bill about 'liberty and justice for all'
by Dyana Bagby
March 21, 2013 14:50

State Rep. Karla Drenner (D-Atlanta) appealed to patriotism, faith and "liberty and justice for all" during a hearing this morning asking lawmakers to protect state workers from employment discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Drenner, the first openly gay member of the General Assembly, wants the bill to at least see a full committee vote before the legislature adjourns its annual session later this month.

Survey finds rampant homophobia in Ga. schools
by Laura Douglas-Brown
March 21, 2013 12:04

The Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network released a "snapshot" today of what life is like for LGBT students in Georgia schools, and it's not a pretty picture.

Some 92 percent of Georgia middle and high school students surveyed reported "regularly" hearing homophobic slurs like "fag," while more than 40 percent said they had been physically harassed and more than 20 percent had been physically assaulted based on sexual orientation.

“While we have seen some progress nationally in the 14 years since we started our National School Climate Survey, much work remains to ensure that all Georgia schools are safe and affirming environments for LGBT students,” said Dr. Eliza Byard, GLSEN executive director, in a press release. “We look forward to working with our Georgia partners to ensure that every LGBT student has equal access to a quality education.”
