While it may have only been “Mistreatment Awareness Day” to Gov. Nathan Deal, a crowd turned out May 17 for Georgia’s observance of the International Day Against Homophobia & Transphobia.
The Friday evening gathering on the lawn at First Christian Church of Decatur featured keynote speaker Rev. Ray Waters, entertainers, and a candlelight vigil.
State Rep. Keisha Waites (D-Atlanta) presented a resolution honoring the International Day Against Homophobia signed by Georgia’s three openly lesbian state lawmakers — Waites and Reps. Karla Drenner (D-Avondale Estates) and Simone Bell (D-Atlanta). The event also received official recognition from the City of Decatur, signed by Mayor Jim Baskett, which was presented by Drenner, according to IDAHO organizer Betty Couvertier. For the second year in a row, event organizers requested an official proclamation from the governor’s offi ce. And for the second year in a row, Deal’s offi ce sanitized the name to “Mistreatment Awareness Day” and removed all specific references to sexual orientation and gender identity.

The University of Georgia will begin to offer some "soft" benefits to employees' domestic partners, but the plan falls far short of what LGBT staff and allies requested.
School officials announced today that the university will offer employees the option to buy benefits like dental and vision insurance for their domestic partners, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
These benefits are paid for by the employees and have been in place at several other state universities for years. LGBT staff at UGA had requested full benefits, including health insurance, and had suggested options for paying for the benefits if no state funds could be used.

Rob Anglin and his partner, Jens Palsgaard, pulled together charts, polls and even a Power Point presentation as they prepared to meet with U.S. Rep. David Scott at his office in Smyrna, Ga., to discuss his position on same-sex marriage.
“We wanted to get as much stuff put together as possible,” Anglin said. “We were told we would only have 20 to 30 minutes.”
Turns out the couple, who began dating last July and got engaged in November, didn’t need any of their prepared materials to talk to Scott, a Democrat who represents Georgia’s 13th congressional district, which includes parts of Cobb, Clayton, Douglas, Fayette, Fulton and Henry counties. He is serving his sixth term.

U.S. Rep. David Scott, a Democrat, is now the third member of Congress from Georgia to speak out in favor of marriage equality for same-sex couples. Scott joins Reps. John Lewis and Hank Johnson, also Democrats from the Atlanta area.
"Congressman Scott fully supports marriage equality," stated an email from Scott's spokesperson received by gay blog Joe.My.God. yesterday.
The blog reached out to Scott's office after a reader said that he and his partner met with Scott and he told them he supported marriage equality.
