Atlanta Eagle attorneys allege city withholding, destroying key evidence in federal lawsuit
by Dyana Bagby
October 18, 2010 12:18

Attorney Dan Grossman

Attorneys representing the Atlanta Eagle in a federal civil suit against the city of Atlanta and numerous Atlanta Police Department officers say the city is deliberately hiding information and even destroying evidence from as they seek details about the botched raid on the gay bar last year.

In court documents filed Oct. 6, the attorneys for the plaintiffs — Dan Grossman as well as attorneys from Lambda Legal and the Southern Center for Human Rights — allege, “Throughout this litigation the Defendants and their counsel have acted as if the rules, the law, and even the orders of this Court simply do not apply to them: They have responded late to most discovery requests; failed to respond at all to others; … failed to preserve, search for, or produce responsive items as required by law; failed to obey clear and unambiguous orders of this Court; and rather than produce evidence pursuant to this Court’s Order, they destroyed it.”

by Dyana Bagby
October 15, 2010 00:00

Officer Brian Sharp recently named Atlanta's second LGBT Liaison

Officer Brian Sharp, the new LGBT liaison for the Atlanta Police Department, was out in full force over Atlanta Pride weekend, visible in the park and walking in the Trans March with his partner.

He first official day on the job was Sept. 30 and his first official duty was lining up openly gay officers to march in the parade. He told Georgia Voice that he was looking forward to his new duties.

“One of the reasons I joined the APD is because it is a large department and is supportive of the GLBT community,” he said.

Volunteers carry a massive rainbow flag during the Pride parade

Tens of thousands flocked to Piedmont Park last weekend to celebrate the 40th year of Atlanta Pride and were greeted with clear skies and warm weather, perfect for lying on the grass and listening to music, marching and circling the marketplace for free swag.

For organizers, this year was also one that desperately needed to go well.

“It was a really, really good Pride,” said James Parker Sheffield, executive director of Atlanta Pride, reflecting on the Oct. 9-10 festival. “Atlanta had been needing that. I was really glad we could deliver.”

HIV vaccine studies underway in Atlanta
by Matt Schafer
October 15, 2010 00:00

HIV researchers from across the globe gathered in Atlanta during the last week of September to share their findings in the worldwide search for an effective HIV vaccine.

AIDS Vaccine 2010 is the only international conference for HIV vaccine researchers. This year’s conference was organized largely by Emory University; AIDS Vaccine 2011 will take place in Thailand.

The conference had over 1,000 attendees from 47 countries. Most were scientists who are working on different ideas on how to prevent the spread of HIV. Not advertised to the public at large, much of the information presented was highly technical in nature.

by Matt Schafer & Dyana Bagby
October 15, 2010 00:00

2009 Atlanta AIDS Walk

The 20th annual AIDS Walk Atlanta steps off Sunday, Oct. 17, from Piedmont Park, drawing thousands to raise funds for 10 local AIDS service organizations.

“The AIDS Walk is a critical piece of most of the organizations … it certainly is for AID Atlanta. It’s a critical part of our fight against AIDS as a community,” says Tracy Elliott, executive director of AID Atlanta, which puts on the walk.

This year’s event hopes to raise $900,000 after bringing in $875,000 in 2009.
