MondoHomo a no-go for 2013
by Ryan Watkins
May 07, 2013 17:03

MondoHomo will not return Memorial Day weekend

MondoHomo, Atlanta's Memorial Day Weekend queer arts festival, is canceled, according to event co-founder Kiki Carr. The decision came earlier this year when organizers felt it was time to move on.

"I think it will reinvent itself," Carr said today about the future of the festival.

"Basically the core group of folks that started it are tired and want to move on other projects," she continued. "We've been slowly coming to that conclusion for a while, but probably came to an agreement in the last two months."

Matthew Morrison at HRC Dinner

The Human Rights Campaign hosted its annual Atlanta dinner on Saturday, May 4, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel to raise funds for the country's largest national LGBT advocacy organization.

The dinner began with a performance from Serenbe Playhouse’s production of “Hair.”

Recent victories, including the repeal of “Don't Ask, Don't Tell” and state victories across the country, made the annual dinner more of a celebration than in previous years.

Battle over Cheshire Bridge Road: Zoning proposal pits gay City Council member, critics
by Dyana Bagby
April 26, 2013 00:00

Cheshire Bridge road businesses

Bobby Hammill sits in his office in the new BJ Roosters on Cheshire Bridge Road. Opened just last month, the gay club is twice the size of its old location just down the street. His neighbors are Jungle and Heretic, two other popular gay clubs, and the Doll House, a strip club.

“I’ve lived in the area for 21 years and I understand what the complaints are about from the neighborhoods,” Hammill said. “But I personally feel what’s going on is unfair. It’s like they are prosecuting people who really aren’t doing anything wrong.”

What’s going on, and has been going on since January, is proposed zoning changes to the Cheshire Bridge Road corridor, long considered Atlanta’s red light district.

Fashionista Tim Gunn calls out Atlanta Pride over aquarium party
by Ryan Watkins
April 24, 2013 16:02

Tim Gunn

The Atlanta Pride Committee is again under fire for its Georgia Aquarium official kick-off event over concerns for the health of the marine animals there.

Tim Gunn, known for his role on TV's “Project Runway,” has written a letter to Atlanta Pride Committee Executive Director Buck Cooke, urging Cooke and the Atlanta Pride Committee to change venues for the Oct. 11 Atlanta Pride Kick-off Party.

Gunn, writing on behalf of animal rights organization PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), called the event “disturbing” for the animals housed at the aquarium and called on the APC to find another venue. (See a full copy of the letter below.)

The Human Rights Campaign will honor TV and Broadway actor Matthew Morrison at the upcoming Atlanta HRC Gala Dinner, set for May 4 at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta.

Morrison, a seasoned Broadway performer as well as a talented musician, is best known for his recurring role as Will Schuester on Fox's hot show “Glee.” He will receive HRC’s Ally for Equality Award.

“We recognize Matthew Morrison, a star in music, theatre, and television, for his public commitment to LGBT equality, and in particular to LGBT young people,” HRC President Chad Griffin said today via a prepared statement. “We are proud to honor him with the Ally for Equality Award and thank him for standing up for LGBT people everywhere.”
