'We Do’ Campaign brings marriage protest to Decatur on Monday

Campaign for Southern Equality

The Campaign for Southern Equality brings its “We Do” protest for marriage equality to Decatur, Ga., on Monday, Jan. 7.

The organization made national news last year after several events in North and South Carolina where activists attempted to receive marriage licenses but were denied – and in some cases arrested.

Aaron Sarver, communications director for the Campaign for Southern Equality, told GA Voice today by phone that his organization expects a handful of couples, perhaps as many as five or six, to take part in the Decatur protest where they will apply for and be denied a marriage license.

“We know they'll be denied,” Sarver said. “The point is to take this action, a call for full federal equality. We want LGBT couples married in Massachusetts or Connecticut, we want that to be legally recognized in all 50 states.”

Georgia, along with all of the “Deep South” states, does not recognize or allow same-sex unions.

“LGBT couples married in other states are legal strangers in Georgia. A lot of people don't realize that couples legally married have zero legal rights afforded to them,” Sarver added. “We're underlying that.”

The Campaign for Southern Equality is traveling to seven Southern states – Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia — to kick off 2013.

The Decatur event is tentatively planned for DeKalb County Probate Court (556 North McDonough Street, Decatur, GA 30030) for 1:15 p.m. on Jan. 7.
