Congregation Bet Haverim's Pride Seder

Atlanta Stonewall Week wrapped up this weekend with numerous events to bring the community together to celebrate the anniversary of the 1969 uprising at the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City, that is credited as the start of the modern day lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights movement.

On Friday, June 24, Congregation Bet Haverim and the Atlanta Pride Committee hosted the Pride Seder, similar to the Jewish traditional Seder meals held during Passover but with an obviously LGBT twist. The event included readings of key moments in Atlanta’s LGBT history as well as a commemoration of the 30th anniversary of AIDS. Congregation Bet Haverim’s chorus also entertained the crowd of more than 100 people with traditional Jewish hymns as well as a fun medley of gay favorites such as “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way.”

Atlanta Pride 5k

The 21st annual Atlanta Pride Run 5K put on by Frontrunners Atlanta took place Saturday, June 25, with the start and finish in Piedmont Park. More than 300 men, women and children participated in the event that raised money this year for H.E.R.O. for Children, a nonprofit organization that works to improve the lives of children infected and affected by HIV.

The men’s overall winner was Andrew Sullivan, 22, of Atlanta, who finished the race with a time of 17:28. The women’s overall winner was Kim Feather, 42, of Atlanta, who finished with a time of 18:02. For a complete listing of results, click here. To view a photo album of the race, click here. Sylvia Rivera Transgender panel

Also on Saturday, June 25, the second annual Sylvia Rivera Transgender Community Event was held at the Phillip Rush Center. Sponsored by the Atlanta Pride Committee, the Juxtaposed Center for Transformation and Transgender Individuals Living Their Truth (TILTT), the event included four panels: legislative, art and creativity, health and wellness and youth resources. Panelists discussed everything from the requirements to get your name legally changed, how art is used to express oneself and the importance of regular checkups with physicians. Stonewall Week concludes with a party at Club Jungle

Rounding out Atlanta's Stonewall Week celebrations was a closing night party at Club Jungle featuring drag queens and other performers marking the anniversary of the New York Stonewall Inn riot. The party was held on Saturday, June 25. Money raised from the party went to the Atlanta Pride Committee. To view photos from the party, click here. (Photos by Brent Corcoran/RNZ Photography)
