Deal vs. Barnes: Readers react to governor’s race
Re: Election discussions at facebook.com/thegavoice (Aug. 11)
Editor’s note: GA Voice readers had plenty to say about Nathan Deal’s victory over Karen Handel in the Aug. 10 GOP gubernatorial primary runoff. Deal, who attacked Karen Handel on gay issues, now faces Democrat and former Gov. Roy Barnes and Libertarian John Monds on the November ballot.

Should Mayor Reed apologize on behalf of the city for the Eagle raid? Re: “Mayor Kasim Reed, Atlanta Eagle attorney have testy exchange at LGBT town hall forum” (www.thegavoice.com, July 23)
I have to side with the mayor a bit on this one... even if the parties to the current suit were to all agree in writing that they would drop the suit for an apology, that would not bind the others from the Eagle raid from suing and using the mayor’s words of apology to prove guilt and get a huge legal win against the city. How responsible is it to the “gayest city in America” to subject the city to a multi-million payout to one person in order to save a few thousand earlier. That would hurt us all as well. (Not to mention the rates the city pays for legal insurance could skyrocket based on such moves being made by the mayor.) Is the goodwill worth the risk? Reed is putting the good of the city above his chances of re-election.

Handel should focus on her own family, not gay families Re: “Karen Handel: ‘I would consider’ banning gay adoption” (blog by Laura Douglas-Brown, www.thegavoice.com, July 14)
We’re clearly at the “say anything” point in the campaign. I hope people remember GED Jane and her quitting ways will not fix the serious and longterm problems this state has.

No more ‘Transformers’ to save Screen on the Green Re: “‘Dreamgirls’ provides only drama at Screen on the Green” (www.thegavoice.com, June 19)
I attended [the] ‘Dreamgirls’ viewing. I have to say that not only was I pleased that there was more police presence, but also that they were friendly and courteous. I hope that Screen on the Green organizers will take note and provide more movies geared towards adults. In my opinion, unsupervised teens at these events is what has garnished such violence.
