Gay ‘Groundhog Day’
by Laura Douglas-Brown
May 24, 2013 00:00

Remember “Groundhog Day,” the 1993 film in which Bill Murray has to keep repeating the same day over and over again?

Covering LGBT issues here in Georgia — heck, being an LGBT Georgian — sometimes seems like that.

I felt this way again May 17 when Karen Handel announced her bid for the U.S. Senate seat being left open by retiring Sen. Saxby Chambliss (D-Ga.).

The race had already drawn a crowd of GOP big wigs, including U.S. Reps. Paul Broun, Phil Gingrey and Jack Kingston, and all are genuinely awful when it comes to gay issues.

Know where your money goes
by Laura Douglas-Brown
April 26, 2013 00:00

In the wake of last month’s Supreme Court hearings on gay marriage, Georgia Equality and Lambda Legal teamed up to host a discussion of the potential impact of the cases.

Georgia Equality streamed the event live for those who could not come to the Phillip Rush Center in Atlanta, and the opportunity for online attendees to chat proved interesting.

At one point, one online attendee asked if Georgia Equality is basically a local chapter of the national Human Rights Campaign, receiving money from HRC. The answer, of course, is that Georgia Equality (our state’s largest LGBT political group) and HRC (the nation’s largest LGBT political group) are two completely separate organizations, with no shared funding.

A Westboro Baptist Church protester in Atlanta

Fred Phelps’ Westboro Baptist Church is coming to town, and I couldn’t be happier.

The “God Hates Fags” clan from Topeka, Kan., has announced plans to be in Atlanta for two days in April to protest targets ranging from the NCAA Basketball “Final Four” at the Georgia Dome on April 6 to three congregations — Creflo Dollar’s World Changers Church International in Atlanta, Beulah Missionary Baptist Church in Decatur, and Basilica of The Sacred Heart of Jesus in Atlanta — April 7.

“You won’t go into the Final Four Atlanta orgy-of-gross-drunken-nasty-reveling without being warned by the faithful servants of WBC, with this core message, timely and topical at this hour: Fag marriage dooms nations,” the pseudo-church warns on its website.

For LGBT rights, what a difference three years makes
by Laura Douglas-Brown
March 15, 2013 00:00

It’s now been three full years since the first issue of GA Voice hit the streets, and our anniversary comes as gay and lesbian people here in Georgia and around the nation eagerly away the U.S. Supreme Court hearings on two cases related to same-sex marriage.

With oral arguments looming March 26-27 and decisions expected in June, National LGBT Pride Month, it’s impossible to ignore that we are living in a defining moment for LGBT equality.

The milestone marriage cases bring equal parts excitement and trepidation. A big win could allow gay couples to marry around the country, while a big loss could delay federal marriage rights for years.

Mayor Reed's tempest in a gay marriage teapot
by Laura Douglas-Brown
January 10, 2013 18:18

The controversy over yesterday's Politifact.com ruling that Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed has performed a "full flop" on gay marriage amounts to little more than a tempest in a teapot.

But worse, it badly misses the most important point: Reed did change his position on marriage rights for same-sex couples, and we (and he) should embrace that fact and use it to convince other politicians to change, too.
