For two days this May, cyclists will ride 200 miles from Emory University to the Oconee National Forest as part of the AIDS Vaccine 200. The event, now in its 11th year, is organized by Action Cycling Atlanta and is a benefit for the Emory Vaccine Center. The AV200 will take place over two days, May 18-19.
The goal of the event, according to organizers, is to raise money while bringing about greater awareness of HIV and AIDS. Last year's fundraiser collected just shy of $300,000, the largest haul in the event's history.
“Using friendship, respect and sportsmanship, the AV200 creates a spirit of hope that shows what can be accomplished when we strive for a common purpose and support each other in doing so,” the ACA website states.

But gay men, especially in the country’s five largest sporting leagues — National Basketball Association, Major League Baseball, National Football League, Major League Soccer and National Hockey League — have been reluctant to come out of the closet during their careers. Sure, there are some high-profile allies, like NFL players Chris Kluwe and Brandon Ayanbadejo, but we’re still waiting for an open, active professional male athlete.
The Human Rights Campaign hopes to change the environment in which players can come out with a new campaign called Athletes for Equality, which engages LGBT and straight athletes while raising money for the national LGBT rights organization.

When Beth Schissel and her partner of 15 years, Sally White, approached the clerk in DeKalb County Probate Court earlier this month and asked for a marriage license, they were told that due to Georgia’s law banning same sex marriage, their application was denied.
Schissel and White knew this was going to happen. They know it is illegal for gay couples to get married in the state, thanks to both a law and a 2004 state constitutional amendment approved by a whopping 76 percent of Georgia voters.
But they wanted to put a face on the discrimination.

The end of summer marks the start of the annual fall sports leagues. From softball to flag football, gay and lesbian sporting leagues offer a plethora of options for those seeking competitive fun this fall.
On the national stage, three of Atlanta’s professional teams look to shake the city’s reputation of being a “miserable sports town,” as stated by Forbes. The Braves, Falcons and Dream are all poised for post-season action in 2012.
The gay National Flag Football League of Atlanta will kick off its fall season with a day of pre-season games Sept. 16 followed by a shorter-than-normal five-week season schedule.
