GLAAD plans second Atlanta Gala to honor community leaders
by Ryan Watkins
September 28, 2012 00:00

Fran Drescher

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation will host its second annual gala Oct. 6 to recognize local LGBT leaders who’ve done work to advance social change.

Some 28 honorees, including GA Voice Editor Laura Douglas-Brown, will receive awards.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by GLAAD and this award is shared with all of the staff who work so hard on GA Voice every day,” Douglas-Brown says.

Other honorees include Q100 morning DJ Bert Weiss, actress Fran Drescher, local fundraising drag troupe Armorettes and nightlife stalwart Blake’s on the Park (see sidebar for full list of honorees).

[Photos] A Dragnificent night at Jungle following the Big Gay Game Show
by Dyana Bagby

Dragnificent debuts at Jungle

There was the family of Mrs. Ropers challenging the Hotlanta Rubber Group in a fun and racy game of Family Feud. I mean really, when asked, "What is something you eat in bed?" one of the top answers is, of course, "ass." Well, when the crowd surveyed is a bunch of gay men at least.

The Big Gay Game Show — held on the third Wednesday of each month at Jungle — benefits the Lost-n-Found organization that helps homeless LGBT youth. And this month, on Sept. 19, the debut of Dragnificent followed the Big Gay Game Game Show with host Nicole Paige Brooks and judges Phoenix (who is also producing the show), Edie Cheezburger and Nina Flowers of "RuPaul's Drag Race" fame.

Contestants for the first night were asked to express who they are. Competing in order of appearance were: Princess Vanessa, Aliya Sexton, Prima Alexandra, Arriana Paris, Tanyla Cassadine, Evah Destruction, Jai' Na Devereaux, Zaria Bonet Valentino, Peyton Elizabeth, Alexandra Knowles and Daniella Vess.

Tips to the contestants were also donated to Lost-n-Found.

Operation MOVE ARCA needs $10k to help HIV agency find new home
by Ryan Watkins
September 17, 2012 13:41

The AIDS Research Consortium of Atlanta is being forced out of its office space on Ponce de Leon Avenue after the facility it has rented for 22 years was sold to real estate developers, the organization recently announced via its Facebook page.

ARCA, founded in 1988, focuses on HIV treatment and prevention research, as well as free HIV/STD testing services. Thousands of Atlantans have participated in more than 75 trials at ARCA, according to its website. “Our trials have contributed to the licensing by the FDA of 25 HIV/AIDS therapies that have been responsible for a dramatic increase in the length and quality of life for persons with HIV,” the agency states.

ARCA's currently facilities are located at 131 Ponce de Leon Ave., NE, between Ponce and North Avenue. The organization has been given until Oct. 22 to vacate the current space and needs some $10,000 to make the move happen, the group announced.

Fall Preview: Atlanta Pride, plus much more to fill your community calendar
by Matt Schafer & Shannon Hames
September 14, 2012 00:00

Atlanta Pride festival

As the temperature falls from the high 90s to the low 80s, Atlanta’s social calendar picks up with some of the biggest LGBT events of the year.

The season offers a bit of everything, from huge outdoor events like Atlanta Pride and AIDS Walk Atlanta, to smaller fundraisers, Halloween galas, and even somber occasions like Transgender Day of Remembrance and World AIDS Day.

Fall is so crowded with LGBT gatherings that two garden party fundraisers will overlap with each other. Both the Health Initiative and Lambda Legal will hold garden parties in Midtown on Sept. 23.
