Your Sisters wish you a Happy New Year

The Atlanta Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence

As 2013 approaches, the Atlanta Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence have a few wishes for LGBT Atlanta.

Selected as this year's GA Voice People of the Year for their non-stop charity work and their role in founding Lost-N-Found Youth, an organization that helps homeless LGBT youth, the Sisters are undoubtedly committed to community.

And their wishes for LGBT Atlanta are for all of us to make the same commitment to helping others and making the communities we live in a better place to be.

‘Festival of Lights’ celebrates diversity

The annual “Festival of Lights” Hanukkah celebration, held at the LGBT-inclusive Congregation Bet Haverim on Dec. 14, promises activities to appeal to all ages under the overall theme of diversity.

Hanukkah is an event that can often seem to appeal more to children than adults, according to CBH Executive Director Amy Robertson. She and the staff are looking to change that.

“In our early years, we didn’t have a lot of children here, but over time we have had more and more families,” says Robertson. “We want to make the evening one where everyone can have a great time.”

GA Voice's Pet of the Week

Each week we meet a new pet available for adoption at PAWS Atlanta.

All adoptable pets are spayed or neutered, microchipped, on flea/tick and heartworm preventative and current on all age-appropriate vaccinations.

The shelter is open seven days a week. Visit in person or online to learn more about how you can adopt these or other pets.

If you adopt a pet featured as a GA Voice Pet of the Week, please let us know! We’d love to post a photo of you and your new furry family member.

Week of events honor transgender community

Transgender Day of Remembrance

For the past decade or more, people have gathered on the steps of the Georgia Capitol to remember transgender people who were killed or died because of who they are. This year, the day will also celebrate life.

The annual Transgender Day of Remembrance, facilitated by Tracee McDaniel and her organization, the Juxtaposed Center for Transformation, is also moving indoors for the first time and will be held at the Phillip Rush Center on Nov. 20.

“In addition to the vigil we’ve added a new component this year,” McDaniel says.
