Pride
Pride: Health Expo is one-stop shop for LGBT wellness
by Laura Douglas-Brown
September 30, 2011 00:00

For the fourth year, Atlanta Pride attendees can learn about health issues ranging from HIV to hepatitis, breast exams to donor insemination, in one convenient location in Piedmont Park.

The Community Health Expo spans 27 booth spaces in the Blue Section of the Atlanta Pride marketplace, with some organizations taking multiple booths to offer services including private, on-site HIV testing.

“It really heightens visibility for these organizations and draws greater attention to overall community health and wellness. Being together also provides these groups with the opportunity to work together over the weekend,” said Pride Executive Director James Sheffield.

“If one agency is approached by someone needing services outside their scope of operation, hopefully they will be able to simply direct that individual to an organization right next door,” he said.

Community health organizations have also benefited from lower costs associated with taking part in the Pride marketplace.

“We have also been fortunate to secure funding for the expo that has allowed us to give the organizations a partial rebate back on their booth fees,” Sheffield said.

“Through the support of Kaiser Permanente over the past two years, we have refunded about $4,000 to the participating nonprofits. We are hoping to give back another $2,000 this year.”

The Atlanta Lesbian Health Initiative has participated in every Community Health Expo at Pride.

“It’s a great time to reach out and build partnerships — and it is always encouraging to see the number of health-related venders grow,” said Linda Ellis, executive director.

But this year will be a bit different for the nonprofit.

Earlier this month, the agency announced that it was changing its name to simply The Health Initiative and broadening its scope to include the entire LGBT community. The full transformation is expected to take until the end of the year, and Pride will be the Health Initiative’s first big event since going public with the change.

A key program that will continue through the transformation is the agency’s Health Fund, which helps un- and under-insured people afford health screenings.

“Our Health Fund always gets a boost at Pride, both in donations and in requests for assistance, and we’ve actually been able to help folks make needed connections with providers through the Health Fair market,” Ellis said.

Pride: Trans March puts the ‘T’ at the front of the line
by Dyana Bagby
September 30, 2011 00:00

Atlanta Pride trans march

Dozens of transgender people and allies are expected to march through Piedmont Park on Saturday, Oct. 8, carrying banners and signs to ensure Pride participants pay attention to the “T” that is part of the LGBT acronym.

“Out of the alphabet soup that is often used to describe us, the ‘T’ is still the piece that most of the community is still working to understand,” said James Sheffield, executive director of Atlanta Pride.

“I still get phone calls from people who don’t understand why transgender people are included in the gay community at all,” he said.

MORE INFORMATION:

Trans March
Saturday, Oct. 8
Assembly begins at 1:15 p.m.
Steps off at 1:45 p.m
Starts at the Hospitality Center
(near the Piedmont Park 12th Street gate)

The Trans March seeks to bring visibility to a group of people often overlooked by many gay and lesbian people, Sheffield added.

“These people are on a mission. How many of us go to an event that talks about LGBT but there is no reference to T other than saying the letter? The march is about bringing direct attention to the trans community to the larger LGB and Q community,” he said.

Three years ago, at the first Trans March, Sheffield marched not only as the executive director of Pride but also in his first major public appearance as a transgender man.

“The Trans March will always hold a special place for me,” he said. “It feels special to me, but it’s also special to provide that space and activity for those who don’t always feel represented in other things going on.”

Speakers are invited to say a few words before the march steps off. This year, Atlanta Pride organizers are also asking volunteers to shout chants to bring added visibility.

“The extra energy that makes all the difference in the world,” Sheffield said.

Pride: Dyke March gets radical attitude
by Dyana Bagby
September 30, 2011 00:00

2010 Atlanta Pride Dyke March

From making pasties so women can march topless to holding a dance party after the marching is done, this year’s Atlanta Pride Dyke March seeks to reach back to its more radical roots.

“We’ve been working with Atlanta Pride to make it a bigger and better Dyke March — we want to start the ball rolling so it becomes bigger and bigger each year,” said Kiki Carr.

The march is open to all women and is trans inclusive — the word “dyke” is not meant to scare anyone off. In the past, men have also marched.

“Having a march for lesbians is a way to show our power in the community,” Carr said.

Carr, who lived in San Francisco for 10 years and remembers marching with 10,000 other women in that city’s annual Dyke March, said the event was like Christmas and Halloween and her birthday all wrapped up into one day.

“I want it to be radical,” she said of Atlanta’s Dyke March. “But I want it to be also for people who don’t consider themselves radical. While I think those that are organizing the march this year are radical, that’s definitely not where we are putting the focus. It’s more important for us to be inclusive.”

The march goes down 10th Street, turns right onto Peachtree Street, then turns right onto 14th Street and leads back into Piedmont Park.

This marks the first year the Dyke March will have a Grand Dyke Amazon. Pat Hussain will lead the march seated in a convertible. Hussain was co-leader of Olympics Out of Cobb, which was instrumental in keeping the 1996 Atlanta Olympics out of the suburban community after the county commission passed a resolution denouncing the “lifestyle advocated by the gay community.” Hussain is also a co-founder of Southerners on New Ground.

“We have a logo for the first time and we’re looking for volunteers — we’re hoping to have baton twirlers and flag twirlers and a drum corps from the Atlanta Freedom Marching Band,” said Carr.

Before the march, there is a “family” picnic at the Piedmont Park dock starting at 3:30 p.m. where people will make pasties (so women who want to can march topless, a longtime tradition of the Dyke March) and compete in a peach eating contest. The winner will be selected on how “artfully” she can eat a peach, Carr said.

Costumes are encouraged and this year community groups are invited to march together.

There will also be a “Disco Dyke” dance party after the march at the Bud Light Stage with queer DJ Speakerboxx spinning the beats.

Donations are sought to offset the costs of this year’s march and can be made by visiting atlantapride.org and marking your contribution for the Dyke March.

Black Gay Pride: Stars shine over Labor Day weekend
by Dyana Bagby
September 02, 2011 00:00

Musical artist Brandy will perform at Atlanta's Black Gay Pride weekend

Each year, party promoters for Black Gay Pride are able to bring top celebrities to Atlanta over Labor Day weekend to the appreciation of tens of thousands of people who flock to the city from around the country to participate in the largest event of its kind.

Last year, Nicki Minaj, Fantasia, Lil Kim, Kelly Rowland and Amber Rose were just a few of the divas to perform or simply make an appearance and say hi to thousands of adoring fans.

This year is no different with stars hosting events, performing and doing walk-throughs at dozens of locations during Labor Day weekend. So, who’s going to be in Atlanta this weekend helping to make memories for Black Gay Pride attendees? Here’s a sampling of some of the top-notch entertainment slated:

Black Gay Pride: In the Life Atlanta offers full slate of empowering events
by Laura Douglas-Brown
September 02, 2011 00:00

In the Life Atlanta president Raymond Duke

In the Life Atlanta celebrates its crystal anniversary this year, marking 15 years of building community empowerment through Black Gay Pride weekend.

“The overarching theme for our anniversary this year is ‘In the present, learning from the past to shape the future.’ We chose the crystal ball because it’s been 15 years; 15 is the crystal year,” explained ITLA President Raymond Duke at a press conference late last month.

The non-profit organization formed in 1996 to bring a cultural component to Black Gay Pride, which began as an informal network of house parties, nightlife and other gatherings.

Now, organizers want to celebrate the past while also looking to the future.
