100,000 miles together as a gay family
by Dyana Bagby

Box Turtle Bulletin has a great post about a young man sharing the story of his two moms and the heartaches they have shared through the years. Then he tells of this one amazing milestone that makes you want to hug your loved ones and put Melissa Etheridge on the iPod.

Check out this story from NPR's Snap Judgment — a program described as storytelling with a beat — by Noah St. John, 15, about him and his two moms.

Advocate names Atlanta 9th 'gayest' city in America
by Ryan Watkins
January 09, 2013 12:28

Atlanta Pride festival

The Advocate today released its annual list of the “Gayest Cities in America.” Atlanta, the birthplace of civil rights, was ranked 9th, the same position it held a year ago in Advocate's 2012 rankings.

Other cities featured in this year's list include three cities from Washington state. Tacoma, Wa. was named this year's “gayest city.” (Complete list at the bottom of this article)

The ranking criteria isn't exclusive to gay bars and nightlife, nor is it an exact scientific determination, as the Advocate points out.

AJC calls out Atlanta mayor for gay marriage 'flip-flop'
by Ryan Watkins & Dyana Bagby
January 09, 2013 11:00

images/stories/mayorreed.jpg

The Atlanta Journal Constitution and Politifact.com today released an analysis of Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed's recent embrace of same-sex marriages, calling the change of heart a “major reversal of position” and a political “flip-flop.”

Mayor Reed has been an advocate for LGBT causes during his time as mayor and as a state legislator, but instead of embracing the change of position, his comments on the article seem to indicate that he was in our corner the entire time. In truth, he was a friend and an advocate and supporter of civil unions, but he was not a supporter of marriage equality until quite recently.

From the mayor's official Facebook account this morning:

Anti-gay boobs on the Hill, or DOMA defense renewed thanks to House Republicans
by Ryan Watkins
January 03, 2013 14:07

US House

Today marks the first official day of the 113th session of the United States Congress. With new appointments, incoming freshmen legislators and the drama of the fiscal cliff behind them, things are returning to what Washington considers “normal.”

One of the first acts of the Republican leadership in the House was to extend funding to continue the legal defense of the Defense of Marriage Act in its court challenges.

The Supreme Court announced in December that it would hear a challenge to the 1996 law that forbids the federal government from recognizing same-sex unions. Lower court rulings have consistently found the law unconstitutional. The Department of Justice announced last year it would no longer defend DOMA in its many court challenges.

[Video] Mary's ¡Glitz! choreographer is a CL person to watch in 2013
by Dyana Bagby
January 03, 2013 12:59

Corian Ellisor, the man behind the ¡Glitz! dance and cabaret parties at gay bar Mary's in East Atlanta, is profiled in today's Creative Loafing as one of the people to watch in 2013.

And yes, girl, he is. We've been admiring his moves at such events as MondoHomo as well as Mary's. He is absolutely gorgeous and his choreography is inspirational.

"I'm Type A totally. But I don't want to be like a tyrant. I've just always had this idea that I could gather people together who are like-minded, and we could all rise up together," he tells CL.
