Alcohol, cottage cheese and pet care: This Nielsen survey reads your gay house down
by Bo Shell
February 07, 2013 16:25

You probably know the fine folks at Nielsen for their TV ratings, but now they've just gotten out of hand, giving me (and probably you) a domestic read-down by accurately painting a picture of my unknowingly stereotypical existence.

Sigh.

In a survey published Jan. 30, the marketing measure wizards announced that same-sex partnered households make 16 percent more shopping trips and spend an average of $1,753 more on consumer packaged goods than the average U.S. household.

Megan Phelps-Roper, the granddaughter of Westboro Baptist Church's Fred Phelps, and her sister Grace have split from the anti-gay church known for picketing the funerals of deceased U.S. servicemembers and other events with signs that read “God Hates Fags” and “Fags Doom Nations.”

The announcement came via Medium.com, where Megan offered an explanation of how she came to disagree with her family's ministry and apologized for her past anti-gay statements and actions.

National Gay-Straight Alliance Day aims to recognize student groups
by Ryan Watkins
February 06, 2013 15:31

Gay-Straight Alliance

Today is National Gay-Straight Alliance Day, a day meant to recognize the work gay-straight alliances do in schools across the country to combat bullying, homophobia and transphobia.

Thousands of students now attend colleges and high schools which have gay-straight alliance groups. These groups have become more prominent in recent years, and many have formed in response to instances of bullying or LGBT youth suicide.

LGBT students who attend schools with a GSA are much less likely to suffer bullying or hate speech than LGBT students who do not, according to the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN).

Morehouse College

Someone Cares, an Atlanta-based HIV/AIDS advocacy and prevention organization for African-American and Latino men who have sex with men, will be honored by the Black AIDS Institute at a Thursday night event at the Loudermilk Center in downtown Atlanta.

The event coincides with National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, Feb. 7, an annual observance of the ongoing struggle with the disease in African-American communities.

“We are a outreach agency,” Edwin Kennedy-Worthington, director of programs for Someone Cares, said today by phone. “That's what we pride ourselves on. We're not going to reach the population by sitting behind a computer.”

Gay congressman pushes marijuana legalization
by Ryan Watkins
February 04, 2013 17:37

Jared Polis

U.S. Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.) plans to introduce a measure that would legalize the production and sale of marijuana while creating a new federal tax in jurisdictions that have made the drug legal, according to the Associated Press.

U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) is also spearheading the effort, which has seen renewed interest in recent years. Polis is one of a handful of openly gay members of Congress and hails from a state that recently passed marijuana legalization.

The proposal would allow the government to treat marijuana similarly to how it deals with alcohol.
