Adm. Mullen: Congress should repeal ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ this session
by Ryan Watkins
November 22, 2010 10:56

Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, appeared on ABC’s “This Week” yesterday and called for Congress to pass a repeal of the military’s anti-gay “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy during the current lame-duck session.

Also announced yesterday was an early release of the Pentagon’s report on a study of the policy. The report will be issued on Nov. 30, instead of Dec. 1, according to ABC.

Last week, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced that he planned to reintroduce the 2011 defense authorization bill that would include repeal language for DADT. Both President Barack Obama and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates have called for the policy to be repealed before the next session of Congress.

Lawmakers: Repeal of military gay ban possible in lame-duck Congress
by Ryan Watkins
November 19, 2010 14:38

About a dozen U.S. senators held a press conference yesterday to address a possible repeal of the military’s anti-gay “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy during the current lame duck session of Congress.

President Barack Obama and Defense Secretary Robert Gates have called for the policy to be repealed before mid-January, when Republicans take control of the House.

Though the conference featured mostly Democrats, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) joined the caucus to say that he believed the required number of votes to pass the repeal was in hand. Lieberman said that GOP Sens. Susan Collins (R-Me.) and Richard Lugar (R-In.) could be counted on to vote in favor of repeal if a compromise could be reached between Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nv.) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).

‘Daily Show’ attacks McCain’s gay rights flop
by Ryan Watkins
November 16, 2010 12:20

“The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” bashed Cindy McCain and her husband, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), last night over the couple’s recent “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” flop.

Cindy McCain appeared in a recent promotional video for the NOH8 campaign where she said, "Our political and religious leaders tell LGBT youth that they have no future.”

Sen. McCain has been an ardent supporter of the anti-gay military policy and has vowed to fight Congressional repeal with a filibuster.

McCain debates military gay ban on Meet the Press
by Ryan Watkins
November 15, 2010 11:33

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) made an appearance on this weekend’s “Meet the Press.” McCain addressed a wide array of issues, including his stance on the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.

The senator reiterated his desire to see a completed report from the Pentagon regarding the policy:

You and I have not seen that study.  And this study was directed at how to implement the repeal, not whether the repeal should take place or not.  But, very importantly, we have people like the commandant of the Marine Corps, the three other — all four service chiefs are saying we need a thorough and complete study of the effects — not how to implement a repeal, but the effects on morale and battle effectiveness.
