Ga. Rep. Paul Broun likes being a boy
by Dyana Bagby

During a recent town hall meeting in Winder, U.S. Rep. Paul Broun, a Republican from Athens, wanted people to be clear he is secure with his gender identity.

"I don't want to pay for a sex change operation. I'm not interested. I like being a boy," he said in his criticism of the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.

Broun threw his hat into the ring for Sen. Saxby Chambliss' seat after Chambliss said he was not seeking another term because he's tired of all the gridlock in Washington, D.C. Chambliss also made headlines when he vocalized his opposition to same sex marriage with the pithy statement, "I'm not gay, so I'm not going to marry one."

The 5 best (and by 'best,' we mean worst) Ga. Republican quotes on LGBT issues
by Laura Douglas-Brown
April 01, 2013 16:41

Georgia GOP Chair Sue "Free Ride" Everhart isn't the only Republican in the state to spout off ridiculous nonsense about LGBT people. We hesitate to post this list today, lest you think these quotes are an April Fool's Day joke. But no, Georgia conservatives actually said all of these outrageously offensive, painfully stupid things about gay people.

Here are the five of the dumbest things prominent Georgia conservatives have publicly said about LGBT issues, culled just from the last three years of GA Voice coverage.

The Marietta Daily Journal deserves credit for first publishing several of these, a dubious honor for the city in Cobb County, which approved the infamous 1993 resolution declaring homosexuality incompatible with community standards — prompting protests that ultimately cost Cobb the chance to host events in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Ga. GOP chair in bigoted tirade: Marriage equality nothing but 'a free ride'

by By Ryan Watkins

The Marietta Daily Journal published an article on Friday examining the reaction of Cobb residents in the wake of the recent U.S. Supreme Court marriage arguments and the viral Facebook profile picture-swap of red equality symbols that was impossible to miss.

The article, written by Jon Gillooly, profiles several pro-gay rights OTP'ers and closes with an interview with current Georgia Republican Party Chairperson Sue Everhart, who makes a few outlandish statements in defense of “traditional” marriage.

[VIDEO] Could Bob Barr now be too pro-gay for Georgia?
by Laura Douglas-Brown
March 28, 2013 13:18

former us rep bob barr

Former U.S. Rep. Bob Barr authored the Defense of Marriage Act, then said he would repeal it. Will that make him too liberal for Georgia Republicans as he seeks to return to Congress?

Barr has a press conference scheduled today in which he's expected to announce his bid for the 11th District congressional seat currently held by Rep. Phil Gingrey. Yesterday, Barr said in a video posted on Youtube that he would announce his candidacy today.

Gingrey, no friend of LGBT rights, is vacating the seat to run for the U.S. Senate post that will be open thanks to Sen. Saxby Chambliss' decision not to seek reelection.
