Atlanta LGBT groups finalize NOM counter-protest plans

The National Organization for Marriage protests in Indianapolis

The Queer Justice League of Atlanta, Georgia Equality and MEGA Family Project are finalizing plans for a counter-protest to an anti-gay marriage group’s planned demonstration in Atlanta.

The National Organization for Marriage (NOM) will make its way to the Georgia Capitol on August 7th as part of a national “marriage tour.”

A counter-protest, The "Love + Commitment = Marriage" rally, will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Woodruff Park, while a demonstration will be held at the front of the Georgia Capitol from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

NOM is in the process of holding 20 rallies across the country calling for the defense of “traditional marriage.” Gay marriage is banned by the Georgia Constitution and there is currently no pro-marriage legislation making its way through the assembly.

“We’re excited to get on the road and meet people face-to-face, sharing with them the importance of marriage and how critical the future of marriage is to our country,” said Brian Brown, NOM’s president, in a recent press release. “Marriage will be a key national issue once the California Prop 8 battle gets to the Supreme Court. We need Americans to rally behind marriage as the union of one man and one woman and tell the Courts and state legislatures that marriage matters.”

NOM has demonstrated hate speech during their rallies. At a recent event held in Indianapolis, a NOM supporter was photographed holding a sign calling for the death of gay couples.

Here’s an interesting video of a recent NOM gathering in Providence, RI:
