At a time when it seems like any straight diva who can sing even marginally is a "gay icon," expect LGBT fans to turn out in droves to see the real thing: Madonna plays Philips Arena tomorrow night at 8 p.m.
"Gay icon" used to be reserved for stars with that certain mix of talent, survival instincts, triumphing against the odds, challenging norms, and actual ties to the LGBT community — in addition to Madonna, think Cher, Bette Midler, Barbara Streisand and Janet Jackson.
Now the term has been diluted to include everyone from "Real Housewives" to all of the aging '80s pop stars and "American Idol" contestants who have found new career opportunities on the stages of Pride festivals around the country.

The man who accused Elmo puppeteer Kevin Clash of an illicit sexual relationship is now recanting the allegations, according to The New York Times.
From The New York Times:
Andreozzi & Associates, a law firm that said it represented the accuser, who has never been named, said in a statement that “he wants it to be known that his sexual relationship with Mr. Clash was an adult consensual relationship.” The statement added, “He will have no further comment on the matter.”

Now that the dust has settled on the 2012 general election, stories of improper sexual conduct have begin to dominate the national media landscape. I wish I could recap the story swirling around resigning CIA Director Gen. David Petraeus, but the twists and turns are honestly quite difficult to follow. Secret CIA prisons, affairs, FBI investigations... It's all a bit much. Plus, there's not really a gay angle to the story.
But over the weekend, a second story broke with a decidedly gay subplot.
The puppeteer and voice behind “Sesames Street” character Elmo was forced to take a leave of absence from the show following an accusation he had an improper sexual relationship with a then-16-year old male.

GA Voice columnist and All News 106.7 radio personality Melissa Carter will host a night of art to celebrate the creative works of her mother, Millie Pete Carter. The event, called "The Way I See It," will be held Thursday, Nov. 15, at Muse & Co. in Roswell and will benefit Vision Rehabilitation Services of Georgia.
“My Mom, Millie Pete, has been an artist and art teacher all her life, and even though she is losing her vision she is still creating art,” Melissa Carter said of the upcoming event. “This Thursday we are going to display and sell a variety of her pieces at an event called The Way I See It, to benefit Vision Rehabilitation Services of Georgia.”
Mille Pete is suffering from macular degeneration, a medical condition which ultimately results in the loss of vision. Melissa wrote about her mom's condition, and all that she has learned from her mother, in a March 2012 GA Voice column:

Retired rugby star and now full-time anti-bullying advocate Ben Cohen launches his new magazine and hosts a sports awards dinner in Atlanta on Wednesday — and informed sources say Babydaddy from the famed Scissor Sisters will be on hand to join in the celebrations.
The Compete Sports Diversity Awards and StandUp Magazine launch will be held together on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at TWELVE Atlantic Station, located at 361 17th St. NW, Atlanta, GA 30363. Tickets are still on sale for both events and can be purchased here. Nov. 14 also marks the Second Annual StandUp Day marking the anniversary of Cohen's father's death after he was killed trying to stand up for an employee who was being attacked.
