Cher fights homophobia via Twitter
by Sage Nenyue
August 01, 2011 14:46

Musical icon and gay rights advocate Cher

65-year-old singer and icon Cher (too fabulous for a last name) erupted in gay-allied fury all over Minn. Rep. and presidential contender Michele Bachmann. Cher tweeted on Sunday night:

Just got spam letter from M. Bachman! My reply ! Woman go bake 2 school take history ! & if I was on my deathbed & your best friend was JESUS!!! I WOULDNT VOTE 4 YOUR GAY HATING, BULLY LOVING , POSER CHRISTIAN ASS ! Got One From The TEA PARTY 2.l ! Head STILL SPINNING !Not HAPPY With Leaders.of DEMS & PRES. EIither wtf!

Despite the heavy-handed misspellings—perhaps righteous fury has that effect?—Cher is echoing the sentiment that many in the gay community can vibe to: A sentiment that wonders how it is 2011 and a presidential hopeful can retain hope in an ever-diversifying nation and still be married to a man whose clinic still practices conversion therapy.

Cher replied to this then-new information exactly a month ago:

[Video] Tempers flare during NAACP panel discussion on LGBT issues
by Ryan Watkins
August 01, 2011 11:58

NAACP CEO Ben Jealous

CNN anchor Don Lemon, who recently came out as gay, moderated a panel discussion on black LGBT issues during the annual National Association for the Advancement of Colored People conference in Los Angeles over the weekend. Panel participants included out comedian Wanda Sykes, civil rights activist Julian Bond and other leaders in the black gay community and focused on a wide variety of topics from homophobia and hypocrisy in the black church to reaching out to allies in the community.

The two hour discussion was held at the Los Angeles Convention Center during the organization's 102nd annual conference.

There were contentious moments during the discussion, when NAACP CEO Benjamin Jealous was asked how the NAACP could be taken seriously as an advocate for LGBT equality when members of its board have made public anti-gay statements in the recent past.

[Video] Kidz Bop's Gaga cover misses the point
by Bo Shell
July 20, 2011 16:57

Unless you've got children of your own, I suspect you've never heard of Kidz Bop.

I can thank Perez Hilton for introducing me. Or not.

He posted a video of the family-friendly pre-teen pop group covering Lady Gaga's “Born this Way” earlier this week with the following disclaimer:

“Now before anyone raises any eyebrows or questions whether or not LGBT issues are too mature for little kids…This is an *edited* version. The LGBT verse has been taken out. So watch this video and be happy little kids can sing about loving themselves for just the way they are!”
