Actor's Express continues to seek donations to raise $200,000 by the end of July to ensure the gay-inclusive theater company remains open for its 24th season. So far, the theater company has met 78 percent of its goal, meaning some $40,000 is still needed. As part of the fundraising campaign, a handy guide was emailed today to supporters to let them know what their money can actually buy. • $5 buys 1 sheet of lighting gel to make the "Xanadu" sequins sparkle. • $10 buys 1 sheet of masonite to help make the floor for "Next Fall." • $5 buys 1 sheet of lighting gel to make the "Xanadu" sequins sparkle. • $10 buys 1 sheet of masonite to help make the floor for "Next Fall." • $15 buys 1 yard of china silk to use on the set of "Spring Awakening." • $20 buys 1 gallon of paint to transform our theater into a Midwestern farm for "Edith Can Shoot Things and Hit Them." • $25 buys 2 rolls of glo-tape so our actors can find their way in the dark. • $30 buys a pair of tight jeans for the cabana boy in "The Night of the Iguana." • $50 buys all the materials to make the brick wall for "Spring Awakening." • $75 buys a mirror ball for "Xanadu." • $100 will create Melchoir and Wendla's hayloft for "Spring Awakening." • $150 buys two pairs of roller-skates for "Xanadu." • $250 builds the jungle for "The Night of the Iguana." • $500 pays for one opening night celebration. • $750 rents one microphone for the run of "Spring Awakening." • $1,000 keeps the lights on for one month. • $2,500 buys all the scenery for "Xanadu." • $5,000 pays for internet and phones for one year. • $15,000 pays for the all the musicians for "Spring Awakening" and "Xanadu." The Atlanta-based gay-favorite theater, named this year's Best Theater by GA Voice readers, faced dire financial straits in February when openly gay artistic director Freddie Ashley put out a "life or death" plea to raise $200,000 to keep the theater open. In April, the theater's board chair sent out a letter saying the theater had raised $50,000 but still had a far way to go to ensure the theater ― which has produced such hits as "Judas Kiss" and "Xanadu" — remains open.
