The Stonewall Bar Association of Georgia announced today two recipients of the 5th annual Kay Young Scholarship. Elizabeth Redpath, a second-year law student at Emory University, and Jasmine Rice, a third-year law student from the University of Georgia School of Law, will each receive $1,200 to attend the Lavender Law Conference and Career Fair held Sept. 8-10 in Hollywood, California.
The Kay Young Scholarship is named in honor of the late Kay Young, a Stonewall Bar board member and attorney who passed away in 2007.
Redpath, a former advertising executive with David Atlanta and Southern Voice, is the co-president of OUTLaw, Emory Law School's LGBT group.
Rice is a former legal intern for Georgia State Senate’s Democratic Caucus and worked as a law clerk with the American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia's legal department.

The Atlanta City Council is considering a measure that would allow city voters to decide in November whether or not to allow retail alcohol sales on Sunday.
Sunday alcohol sales are supported by City Council Members Alex Wan, Kwanza Hall, Cleta Winslow, Keisha Lance Bottoms, Michael Julian Bond, H. Lamar Willis, and Yolanda Adrean, according to a press release from the council.
Wan, councilmember for Atlanta's District 6, is the first openly gay man to serve on the council. He asked supporters on Facebook last week whether or not they supported Sunday alcohol sales. Nearly everyone who responded voiced support for the measure.

Philip Rafshoon, owner of Outwrite Bookstore & Coffeehouse, sat down with Richard Eldredge of Atlanta Magazine to discuss the dire financial straits the bookstore — and the city's unofficial LGBT community center — is under as it prepares to hold its first fundraiser tonight.
Rafshoon said things are not pretty, including the store being behind on rent and bills.
"I think by [this week] we will no longer be behind on our rent. But we are behind on some bills and some payments. Everything is not just fine. We try to be upbeat when people are in the store. But the reality is the big LGBT stores that are left in the country are Giovanni's Room in Philadelphia and Outwrite. Lambda Rising in Washington D.C. is gone. A Different Light in New York is gone. Their location in Los Angeles is closed. And the A Different Light location in San Francisco just closed a few months ago. Out Loud in Nashville just closed," Rafshoon told Eldredge.

I do not claim to be a doctor; just an observer of phenomenon in the natural world — a cultural researcher. Of my findings, I discovered a state of being that I call “21ism.” It refers to the disease that many youth succumb to upon obtaining “legal” status.
With bars being central to mainstream gay social life, 21ism is easily detectable by doctors and survivors of the age-based plague — which can last from one month, curing itself after a spell of experience, to 10 or 20 years in the less mature. It is highly contagious among 21 year olds, with frequent peaks in 20 year olds, less so in 23-25 year olds.
