Midtown Patch asks if neighborhood is losing its gayness
by Ryan Watkins

Activists gather at Atlanta's Outwrite Bookstore and Coffeehouse

Midtown Patch, a hyper-local news outlet funded by AOL, asked an interesting question this morning on its website: Is Midtown losing its gayness?

Amy Wenk, editor of the site, highlights the impending relocation of Outwrite Bookstore & Coffeehouse, as well as the most recent list of the country's “gayest” cities compiled by Advocate.

Atlanta finished this year's list ninth overall, but it's tough to take any list too seriously that doesn't include San Francisco, New York City or Miami. The Advocate makes no claims to any kind of scientific method being applied to the now-annual list. Still, a compliment is a compliment.

Fierce — Atlanta again ranks as one of the gayest cities in America
by Dyana Bagby
January 09, 2012 13:18

The Advocate released its not scientifically sound study of the gayest cities in America today for 2012 and Atlanta is ranked in the Top 10 — number 9, to be exact.

The magazine writes up this year's description of Atlanta:

We won’t fault you for trying to forget Real Housewife Kim Zolciak’s dip into the lesbian pool — but don’t blame Atlanta if everyone there wants to sample the fun LGBTs have all over town. Lesbian businesses thrive in East Atlanta, and gay clubs go off in Mechanicsville. People coming to Atlanta like to party, and the GayTL delivers with Black Gay Pride in September and Atlanta Pride in October, and the black gay clubs’ second-busiest weekend of the year surrounds the observance of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday in January. Holla!

Occupy Atlanta moves in with lesbian couple facing foreclosure
by Ryan Watkins

Occupy Atlanta protesters in Woodruff Park

Activists with Atlanta's Occupy movement will occupy the Riverdale home of Brigitte Walker and her partner, Ajai Craig, the group announced this week.

Walker, an Iraq War veteran, is on 90 percent disability stemming from injuries she sustained while serving in the military and is facing foreclosure from her mortgage holder. Organizers say that her fixed income, along with her bank's refusal to negotiate new terms, have put her home “deep into the foreclosure process.”

Occupy Atlanta will host a press conference at Walker and Craig's home later today, organizers said.

Atlanta gay ruggers do it in drag
by Dyana Bagby

Atlanta Bucks Rugby

The annual Atlanta Bucks Rugby Football Club's Miss Ruck & Maul Pageant will be at Jungle on Saturday beginning at 6:30 p.m. and promises to be a hoot with burly men and their mentors dressed in gaudy drag attire competing for the coveted title.

What's better — the event not only entertains but is also a fundraiser for the Bucks and this year also for the Atlanta Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence's new Saint and Lost Fund to help LGBT homeless youth. You can pay $10 at the door or make a donation online at here.

The hostesses for the Miss Ruck & Maul Pageant are Ruby Redd and Jenna Tellya — also known as rugby players Ray Matheson and Gary Durden.
