SkateBoyz ATL gathered Aug. 8 at Metro Skates on Metropolitan Parkway for its weekly Wednesday skating night.

The LGBT skating organization was formed as a place for those who love to rollerskate to get together for fun, parties as well as providing community service, including conducting HIV tests at the rink.

It was a record high of somewhere near 200 degrees (not really, but close) when a diverse cross-section of Atlanta's LGBT community gathered, very graciously, at Piedmont Park for a photo shoot for our Best of Atlanta cover.
Art Director Bo Shell tried to make the shoot as painless as possible by moving quickly so none of us would melt — and Mr. and Ms. Atlanta Eagle, representing the bar for its awards, were true champs standing in the heat in their leather vests, chaps, and some mighty big boots.

The Atlanta Banana has a story on its website that caught our eyes, "Atlanta's Unemployed Seek Same-Sex Marriages So Politicians Will Talk About Them."
Awesome. Headline. And story.
But, of course, it's not a real story. The Atlanta Banana is a satire news website, similar to The Onion, but focusing on all things Atlanta.

A startup community initiative for "a safe and brighter future for Atlanta's LGBT Youth Rising!" is being organized by a local activist who worked with the volunteer task force that investigated the viability of YouthPride and found it to be in deep debt and disarray.
A Facebook event created by Maggie Lopez late Thursday asks for adults and youth to organize together in the midst of the financial crisis YouthPride is facing.
"It is evident that the demand for services and a safe community center for LGBT youth is larger than any one current organization. The cry for 'someone' to provide alternatives to the status quo in this community has gone on long enough without anyone stepping forward. So, to that end, I invite everyone interested, to come together in unity, sow the seeds that will take root to begin the endeavor," Lopez states.
