Candlelight vigil planned for Saturday to commemorate recent gay teen suicides

A candlelight vigil is planned for Saturday to commemorate the rash of suicides in the past few weeks of several LGBT young people due to bullying.

The Atlanta chapter of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence known as the Order of the Flaming Sugarbakers are organizing the vigil, called "A Time to Remember," that will begin at Brushstrokes in Ansley Mall at 7:30 p.m. and then march to 10th and Piedmont.

“[The suicides] are breaking our hearts,” said Rick Westbrook, aka Rapture Divine Cox. “We’ve all dealt with bullying growing up. We want our queer youth to know that it does get better.

“We want to remember the people who thought they had to end their lives and let them know it gets better and there are people who can help them make it stop,” he added.

Last week, 18-year old Tyler Clementi, a Rutgers student, killed himself after apparently becoming depressed when his roommate and a friend allegedly broadcast live via a hidden webcam over the internet him having sex with another man.

Prior to Clementi, Asher Brown, from Houston, Texas, shot himself in the head on Sept. 23 after reportedly being bullied.

On Sept. 9 in Indiana, Billy Lucas, 15, hanged himself at his grandmother's home after his friends said he endured years of bullying for being gay. Friends of the Lucas said he had been bullied for years because of his sexual orientation.

In Minnesota, Seth Walsh hanged himself from a tree in his garden in Minnesota on Sept. 18, also allegedly due to anti-gay bullying.

The vigil is open to all people who want to remember the queer youth who have died, Westbrook said.
