‘Keep it Gay’ with ‘The Producers’
by Jim Farmer
January 17, 2013 11:11

The Producers

Editor's note: After this article was published, the Fox Theatre posted the following message on its website: "Due to an emergency health issue, Gary Beach will not be performing in THE PRODUCERS. The role of Roger DeBris will instead be played by David de Vries." The show still opens Jan. 25 at the Fox.

Openly gay performer Gary Beach estimates he has played the role of Roger DeBris in the musical “The Producers” somewhere around 1,700 times — not consecutively, but here and there over the years. He reprises the role again for a special Atlanta engagement, courtesy of Theater of the Stars, beginning next week.

Mel Brooks’ comedy, last staged in Atlanta eight years ago, is adapted from his 1968 film. In it, Broadway producer Max Bialystock – fresh off of an unsuccessful production – comes up with a scheme with his sidekick, laid back accountant Leo Bloom.

They plan to intentionally stage the biggest stage flop of all time and bilk millions out of their financial backers, using the worst director in New York. Said director is flamboyant, gay Roger DeBris, who wants to camp up the show and rewrite history so that Germans win WWII. What Max and Leo don’t anticipate is that the new production is a huge success.

GLAAD announces 24th annual Media Award nominees
by Ryan Watkins
January 16, 2013 12:20

GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) today announced the nominees for its 24th annual Media Awards.

The annual awards are meant to highlight positive LGBT stories in the media.

"Images and stories from the LGBT community continue to push support for equality to historic levels," said GLAAD President Herndon Graddick in a prepared statement. "This year's nominees enlighten and entertain, but also reflect a new American landscape where a growing majority accept and value their LGBT family, colleagues and friends. Now more than ever, viewers not only accept gay and transgender characters and plot lines, they expect them - just as they both accept and expect LGBT people to be a valuable part of their everyday lives."

Drag queen embroidery project and other Atlanta gay artists awarded funding grants

A man working on an extensive embroidery project detailing the faces of some of Atlanta's drag queens is just one of several gay and gay-popular artists receiving funding from a grassroots group that celebrates "creative risk takers."

Idea Capital, an Atlanta independent arts funding group, selected Aubrey Longley-Cook, who is gay, as one of its recipients this year for his work in combining embroidery and animation to document Atlanta drag queens.

Must-sees for your gay Netflix account: Part 2
by Bo Shell

Gay favorites for Netflix

In June 2011, I wrote a random blog about gay content on Netflix that accidentally became one of the most read pieces in our website's history, proving at last that I am a wizard. A sometimes bored wizard with nothing to do but scour Netflix for something interesting to watch.

The following snippets from 2011 are still true:

It's no secret that I'm in an open relationship with my Netflix instant account. I watch a lot of documentaries and super-dramatic sad movies, but every now and then I'll indulge my inner queen and look for time wasters in the gay and lesbian genre.
