Travel: 10 tips for better trips
by Jo Giraudo, Insider Traveler
April 29, 2011 00:00

Get your passport in order before your trip

COMPARE FARES
Buy your air tickets on Tuesday afternoons. Fly during the middle of the week. Sign up for airfare alerts at FareCompare.com.  In the current world travel climate ticket prices are going up daily. Do not wait for a sale. There will be none.

BE PRO-CHOICE
Pick what view you want from your seat on the plane; it could be left side land or right side water. And choose port or starboard for your ship cabin.  A cabin facing west in the afternoon will be warmer due to all day sun, but it might be the land view.

HOTEL HAPPINESS
When you enter your hotel room, walk around each room and look at the view. If everything is not just as you want it, go back to the front desk and politely request a different room to make your stay more enjoyable. It is your right, your money, and even your obligation to get exactly what you expected when you made your reservation. Hotels are eager to make you happy; upgrades are often given as an apology for your initial dissatisfaction.

Atlanta Film Fest features LGBT flicks
by Steve Warren
April 29, 2011 00:00

There’s a lot of masturbation, literal and figurative, going on in the LGBT entries in the 2011 Atlanta Film Festival, whether they’re included in the gay “Pink Peach” section or in general narrative categories.

It’s common in festivals to find the results of filmmakers’ onanism splayed across the screen, but this year actors are doing the deed as well. Look for werewolf movies next year to explain all the hairy palms.

Joslyn Jensen in “Without” and Mark Cirillo in “The Seminarian” are each given more close-up face time than Meryl Streep has had in her whole career, so it’s not surprising that the camera doesn’t venture below the waist when they pleasure themselves. The prize for the most masturbation goes to Lydia Hyslop, who can’t keep her hand off herself in “Vacation!” except when she’s substituting household appliances, especially a blender.

How to eat like a queen on a peasant’s budget

Fierce Dishes explores cheap eats

There is one efficient way to save money and still eat at nice places. Take advantage of the specials during the week.

The Here to Serve Restaurant Group, known for its restaurants’ architecture, has some of the best during-the-week deals. For example, on Monday at Noche you can get really good $2 tacos which normally run $4-5.

We went to the Vinings location, which has a charming, darkly lit, cantina vibe. We ordered all the tacos, which consisted of shrimp with black beans and roasted corn; crispy fish with spicy slaw; grilled veggie with charred tomato salsa; and the grilled chicken with chunky house-made guacamole. My favorites were the pulled pork with fire roasted chilies and jack cheese, and the marinated steak with pepper-jack cheese.

‘Judas Kiss’ explores love of Oscar Wilde
by Jim Farmer
April 29, 2011 00:00

'The Judas Kiss' at Actor's Express

Playwright Oscar Wilde had the opportunity to escape with his younger male lover and avoid the indecency charges that eventually imprisoned and destroyed him. Why Wilde did not take that chance is explored in David Hare’s drama “The Judas Kiss,” opening May 12 at Actor’s Express.

Author of such classics as “The Picture of Dorian Gray” and “The Importance of Being Earnest,” Wilde was one of London’s most popular writers in the 1890s. But imprisoned for two years for “the love that dare not speak its name,” Wilde never recovered his stature or spirit and died at age 46.

Making its Atlanta debut, this production of “The Judas Kiss” features two gay actors in the lead roles — Freddie Ashley (returning to acting after seven years) and Clifton Guterman — as well as a gay director, David Crowe. Ashley plays Wilde and Guterman stars as his lover, Lord Alfred Douglas, nicknamed Bosie.
