What happened to spring? With temperatures soaring, we just had to get out of town, and the Atlantic coast is the perfect destination. If you’re single, on a budget and with friends, head to Savannah. But if you’re married, head to Saint Simons Island or Jacksonville, Fla. They aren’t that far, not that expensive and you can drive.
My parents live on Saint Simons Island so that’s where we vacationed. I am very lucky that my mother accepts and embraces my sexual orientation and my partner. If you want something gayer and more expensive, head further south to Fort Lauderdale or my favorite, Key West.
Longtime Atlanta residents might remember Indigo Coastal Grill and Partners, restaurants created by Alix Kenagy. Chef Kate Buchanan, Kenagy’s daughter, now has the most amazing, unique restaurant in downtown Brunswick, Ga. — Indigo Coastal Shanty.

The plot of “Rock of Ages” may be light, but the show makes up for that with an abundance of beloved ‘80s tunes. The musical, debuting shortly in Atlanta with gay-friendly “American Idol” contestant Constantine Maroulis, also has a notable gay moment in its second act.
In a legendary rock club in Los Angeles, circa 1987, small-town girl Sherrie falls for Drew (Maroulis), a young busboy with dreams of being a rocker. As local developers convince the mayor to make the area a wholesome environment and get rid of sex, drugs and rock and roll, the club owner coaxes a legendary band to play their final gig there. Along the way, there is plenty of music from the likes of Def Leppard, Styx, Pat Benatar, Bon Jovi, REO Speedwagon and more to move its story along.
Maroulis thinks “Rock of Ages” is similar in tone to American musicals of the ‘30s.

Writer/director Mike Mills’ father did something bold at the age of 75: After his wife of 45 years passed away, he came out of the closet as gay. That autobiographical story is the basis of the new film “Beginners,” opening next week in Atlanta.
In the film, the bombshell revelation comes from the mouth of Hal (Christopher Plummer) to his surprised son Oliver (Ewan McGregor). Hal isn’t interested in being quietly gay either: He wants to go out and find a new partner, even as he battles illness. How he goes about leading his life eventually parallels the relationship of Oliver, who has romantic issues of his own, has with an actress (Melanie Laurent) with her own baggage.
Although Mills based the film on his own family circumstances, it isn’t a mirror image.

Although Taprena Augustine is now a musical theater veteran, she makes it clear that appearing in the national tour of “The Color Purple” is both a professional and personal high point of her career. The musical returns next week to Atlanta, with its lesbian relationship intact.
Georgia author Alice Walker’s best-selling 1982 novel is the inspiration for the musical, which had its world premiere at Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre in 2004. Shortly after that it bowed on Broadway where it became a commercial success and won a Tony for actress LaChanze. A national tour is on its third stop here.
Augustine was hired at the beginning of last year to play Shug Avery on the road. The actress calls the musical a classic.
