| Gay Cinco de Mayo party more than margaritas at Las Margaritas |

Don't tell gay Atlanta that Cinco de Mayo isn't the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico. The landslide of bar events is too grande to stop and besides, El Dieciseis de Septiembre just doesn't roll off the tongue. The man at the helm of Midtown's largest Cinco fiesta is Oscar Alfredo Valdivieso, better known as the mile-a-minute "Papi" by friends and regulars who frequent his Latin restaurant, Las Margaritas. "This is not just tacos and margaritas," Valdivieso says of his second annual Cinco de Mayo Outdoor Latin Carnaval. "They're going to go crazy."
Valdivieso says last year's event brought in 1,800 partygoers. And that was a Thursday. This Saturday, expect Latin DJs Chiruco and Karlitos, a nine-man salsa/meringue band, production numbers from Alissah Brooks, a stilts show, a performance by pop singer Brie, "a million giveaways," and, according to Valdivieso, 3,000 of his closest friends. "My favorite thing about my party is — the Atlanta community is very segregated," Valdivieso says. "And my party has everything. I'm good friends with the black community, the white community, the Latin community, the straight community… everyone. It's a huge party to bring all the communities together." Valdivieso is upping the ante this year. Last year, a portion of door sales went to the American Red Cross, but this year he's chosen Joining Hearts as his main beneficiary with bartenders from seven local non-profits manning the margarita pouring stations. "We'll have Papi's kick ass margaritas and shots," Valdivieso adds. "Because that's how we do it." As of Monday, April 30, Valdivieso was still unsure of the door charge. While Papi's Carnaval seems like a complete Cinco celebration, it's really just the start of what could be a long evening on Cheshire Bridge Road. Both Jungle and Heretic are offering discounted admission with wristbands from Valdivieso's party. Heretic hosts B.I.G. Productions' "Bear Invasion," with DJs John LePage and Sean Mac starting at 9 p.m. with reduced admission before midnight with Las Margaritas wristband. Jungle savors the Latin spirit with DJ Lazaro of South Beach Miami in the booth and a performance by "Ru Paul's Drag Race" alum Phoenix. Like the Heretic, Jungle offers reduced admission before midnight with proof of party from Las Margaritas. If that's not enough to satiate your Cinco appetite, Xion keeps the party going past 3 a.m. with a birthday performance by DJ Power Infiniti. Take advantage of this Saturday's festivities, party people. Cinco de Mayo falls on a school night until Friday, May 5, 2017.
