Get ready to 'Sing for Your Life'
by Laura Douglas-Brown
January 04, 2013 00:00

Sing For Your Life contestents

Think of it as “Atlanta Idol” or our city’s local version of “The Voice” — but set in a gay bar and with the kind of attitude and attention to detail that only the creators of the queer “Bedlam” party series can bring.

“Sing for Your Life” started soliciting contestants online last month to huge response. A live audition narrowed the field, and on Jan. 10, the top 12 begin live weekly competitions at popular gay nightclub Jungle.

“To be honest with you, a show of this sort has been in my brain for years,” says creator Barry Brandon. “I started off as a singer, not a promoter, so music is really important to me.”

WATCH: Amy & Freddy bring laughs, songs to Mixx

Amy & Freddy, the dynamic Chicago-based comedy duo, return to Atlanta on Nov. 28 for a show at 8 p.m. at  Mixx Atlanta  to bring the holiday spirit into the hearts of gay fans perhaps still digesting that Thanksgiving turkey.

"We've got a pretty good following in Atlanta. We really love Atlanta because everyone is so nice," says Amy Armstrong, one-half of the duo. "It always feels like a vacation when we visit rather than a show."

This year marks the 15th anniversary of Amy Armstrong and Freddy Allen performing together. During that time the two have performed across the US and in more than 20 countries with the comedy as well as musical talents — Amy sings and Freddy is a pianist.

by Staff
November 21, 2012 10:26

Bring on the turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce —- and the LGBT events. Thanksgiving week brings a diverse list of options, from popular DJs to potlucks and bowling, to make you thankful for gay Atlanta.

On Wednesday, you can try your hand at the Turkey Bowl, show your gratitude at First Metropolitan Community Church's Thanksgiving Eve Service, and dance the night away as Power Infiniti spins for the "Butter Ball" at Amsterdam Atlanta.

Thanksgiving Day features events at the Model T, Mary's, and XS Ultra Lounge, among others, and the nightlife parties on through the weekend, including the Turkey Relief Dance Party on Saturday night at My Sister's Room.

Annual 'Black Party' comes to Opera Sunday
by Ryan Lee
October 27, 2012 20:37

Black Party

One of the biggest party weekends on the gay calendar culminates Sunday with the 10th annual “Black Party,” which takes place from 5 p.m. to midnight at Club Opera. More than 3,000 people will be donning their chicest black attire for the event, which is themed “Wicked.”

“It will be everything that wicked encompasses, whether it's wicked scary, wicked sexy, wicked temptation – it will all come to fruition,” says Warren Huntley, an event planner and member of 5FRIENDS4life, the group that hosts the Black Party and its summer counterpart, the White Party.

“People come in everything from very, very skimpy sexy outfits to cocktail dresses and suits, it really just depends on your interpretation of what dressing in all black is,” Huntley says.
