Gay singer Catie Curtis returns to Eddie’s Attic Jan. 26

Folk singer Catie Curtis will be making a stop at Eddie’s Attic on Sunday, Jan. 26 that will feature the songwriting talents of friend and fellow singer Kristin Hall. While Hall, who became embroiled in a large legal fight with her former band Sugarland, now one of the nation’s top bands, won’t be present at the show, her music and voice will definitely be there, Curtis says.

Curtis has toured with Lilith Fair, won the Grand Prize in the 2006 International Songwriting Competition and has released 13 records in a career that has spanned over 20 years.

The GA Voice spoke with Curtis about her new record, her upcoming show with Atlanta’s own Hannah Thomas, and touring while being a parent.

You have a new record…

Catie Curtis: Yes. It’s called “Flying Dream.” I made this record with Kristin Hall. She was a founding member of Sugarland. She’s an out, gay writer. She spent some time where I live in Boston. We connected and wrote almost the entire record together. Then, she sang on it and produced it.

Because there is a legal battle over her music with Sugarland, it’s hard to get Kristen’s music. My new CD will give her fans a chance to hear her voice again. The record won’t be in stores until February but fans that come to by show in Decatur will have an opportunity to buy it.

Will she be with you at Eddie’s Attic?
No, but I will be accompanied by Liz Barnez. She is from Colorado and plays a cajon which is like a box drum that you sit on. She’s kick ass. She can also really sing.

I saw our own home girl, Hannah Thomas, was playing with you at Eddie’s Attic and that you are both brand ambassadors for TomboyX. What’s that?
They make awesome boots, jackets, bracelets,  shirts… all the things that are exactly what I love to wear but are so hard to find in the women’s section at a store. The clothes are made with tomboys in mind. They fit really well and people can go check them out online at TomboyX.com.

You seem to tour in short spurts.
I have 2 kids ages 9 and 11 so I want to stay home as much as possible. It’s okay to do little trips to limited areas and do a few dates. But the way I used to do it, staying out on the road for a long period of time… there is no way that can work for me now.

When you are at home, how do you relax?
Spending time with my partner and kids. I’m hugely into my little black pug that is my shadow. I also love hot yoga. I know it’s a trendy thing but I’ve been doing it for years and I really like it.

You’ve traveled all over so I imagine there aren’t many places you haven’t been yet. But if you could go anywhere you haven’t been, where would that be?

I don’t know why but India comes to mind. Maybe Nepal?

This is true with life in general but especially with travel: you think you understand what a place is going to be like but you don’t really understand it until you are there. I mean, it’s true about finding the love of your life or becoming a parent… you think you know what it will be like but until you’re actually there, you don’t know.

Who is your celebrity crush?
Catie: I can’t think of her name but she’s the woman who plays Mary on Downton Abbey [Michelle Dockery]. It seems strange but she’s very… yeah.

Tickets for the Catie Curtis/Hannah Thomas show are $18 for advance general admission, $23 at the door, and $90 for a reserved table for 4. You can purchase them at EddiesAttic.com or at the box office.
