Robert got out of bed and walked to the bathroom. About a year ago, when he turned 49, he started doing his usual morning grooming virtually without looking in the mirror.
It made shaving difficult at first and he considered growing a beard. But it became easy –a unique skill worthy of performance in a geriatric gay freak show, as he told friends.
But Robert knew that the evidence of aging was not just his own mirror reflection. It was also reflected in the faces of others. A few days after Thanksgiving, he went to the Backstreet reunion party at Jungle where he ran into a few men with whom he partied when he was barely 20. There was a moment of hesitation before they recognized one another for certain, followed by laughter.

The Atlanta Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce’s annual holiday party gets a tasty makeover for 2012. The food-themed “Out in the Kitchen” is planned for the evening of Thursday, Dec. 13.
The chamber’s holiday event is always one of the group’s biggest gatherings of the year, but the 2012 version is “a radical departure, and a new concept,” says board member Andria Towne, who is organizing the party.
“It has a cocktail/networking vibe, but we have added several LGBT or LGBT ally chefs,” she says. “Everyone loves food and there is a chef craze now. That is popular in culture now and we feel this is an unexplored niche.”

He learned in the past that such charismatic men made bad boyfriends, usually requiring constant attention. They were flirtatious with everyone and made Robert feel like a barely present shadow.
That situation came up at the last Food Porn Supper Club meeting. A man named Lee arrived late and introduced himself to Robert. He had black hair and blue eyes, and obviously hit the gym frequently.
Robert felt himself in the kind of awe that usually cued him to get up and leave. But that would be extremely unmannerly at a dinner he was hosting. So he avoided eye contact with Lee.

Choosing to dine at a new restaurant is always an iffy proposition. That’s especially true when the restaurant has replaced a favorite. Robert looked around the patio dining room at the new Eclectic Bistro Bar, then took his seat with other members of the Atlanta Food Porn Supper Club.
“The last restaurant here, Tierra, was one of the best in the city,” he said. “We’ll see how this goes. It’s certainly inexpensive.”
The Supper Club, now in its third month, was attracting about 25 diners. It had not yet met Robert’s half-serious original purpose to find a husband before he turned 50 next year.
